At John Paul II Catholic School, we believe that education is a path to forming the whole person—intellectually, morally, and spiritually. Our mission is rooted in the ArchKCK Office of Catholic Schools vision to foster students who are Joyfully Catholic, Diligently Achieving, and Intentionally Self-Giving. In partnership with our supporting parishes, Queen of the Holy Rosary and St. Pius X, we provide an environment where faith and reason work in perfect harmony to prepare students to become Christian leaders.

✝️ Catholic Identity & Spiritual Life

Our Catholic identity and Christian faith is not just a subject we teach; it is integrated into everything. We intentionally structure our school day and calendar around the rich traditions of the Church.

  • Daily Prayer: Every school day begins and ends in communal prayer, teaching students to constantly invite Christ into their daily lives.
  • Weekly School Mass: Every week, usually on Thursdays at 8:15, our school community gathers to worship and receive the Eucharist together. Classes take turns leading the Mass. Because of our small class sizes, all students take a part in leading by singing in the choir, reading, serving, bringing up the gifts or something else.
  • Pastoral Engagement & Guidance: We are uniquely blessed by the active presence of our pastors, Fr. Gerard Alba and Fr. Bill Bruning. They regularly visit our classrooms, teaching special classes and hosting engaging Q&A sessions that allow students to ask deep questions and grow closer to their spiritual shepherds.
  • Devotional Life: Throughout the liturgical year, students have the chance to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration, the Rosary, and the Stations of the Cross. At Lent, middle schoolers dress up and lead a Living stations of the cross.
  • Saint Projects: One fun tradition for 8th grade is the Saint Projects which happens every fall. Students choose a saint to research, often the saint they will choose for Confirmation, and they do an in-depth research project based on this saint and then do presentations for the school and church community.
🕊️ Sacramental Formation
Receiving the Sacraments is a pivotal part of the Catholic spiritual journeys. We provide sacramental preparation that engages both the student.Students at our school will receive the sacraments at their own parish, usually Queen or St. Pius X.
  • Second Grade (First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion): Students are tenderly prepared to encounter Christ’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to receive His true presence in the Holy Eucharist for the first time.
  • Eighth Grade (Confirmation): Our oldest students undergo deep preparation to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, sealing their baptismal promises and commissioning them to live out their faith boldly as young adults in the Church.

Non-Catholic students go through the same religion curriculum, but are not required to receive any Sacraments. If they are interested though, we can help arrange Baptism and the other sacraments if their parents agree.

📖 Faith Formation Curriculum
Our theological framework aligns with diocesan directives to build a lasting scriptural and catechetical literacy.
  • Early Childhood Formation: In our preschool and younger grades, we lay the groundwork for a deeply personal relationship with Christ. Using hands-on methods like the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, children learn the essentials of faith through the lens of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
  • Theology & Scripture: For our older students, religion classes delve deeper into Sacred Scripture, Church History, the Sacraments, and Catholic social teachings rooted in the Catechism.
  • Education in Virtue: We implement a virtue-based formation program. Students learn to recognize human and theological virtues, practicing them daily to build strong moral character, emotional resilience, and a deep respect for the human dignity of others.
🎓 Academic Excellence & Middle School Service
At John Paul II, academic rigor and spiritual growth go hand in hand. Following ArchKCK Curriculum Standards, our students engage in deep, critical inquiry across Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts through a distinctive Catholic worldview.
True to our call to be Intentionally Self-Giving, service is intrinsic to our student experience. Our middle school students are challenged to live out the Corporal Works of Mercy through a formal service hours requirement and targeted community outreach:
  • Parish Volunteering: Students often actively serve within their own parish communities, including volunteering at Mass as servers, at church events, at parish breakfasts and at school events and fundraisers.
  • Community Service Trips: Our middle schoolers encounter Christ in the vulnerable by participating in off-campus service trips to local organizations, including St. Mary's Food Kitchen and the Catholic Charities Mission Food Pantry. This year middle school students are hoping to take a field trip to the Sisters of the Lamb monastery in Kansas City, KS.
🏛️ Classical or Modern? Our Curriculum Approach
Some families ask, "Is John Paul II a classical school?"
While we are not an exclusively classical academy, our curriculum embraces the best aspects of classical Catholic education while maintaining a modern, fully accredited academic framework. We believe these two worlds complement each other beautifully:
  • Our Classical Roots: Like a classical curriculum, we focus heavily on forming the whole person through virtue, moral reasoning, and the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness. We prioritize deep, critical thinking, the study of foundational texts, and an integrated Catholic worldview where faith and reason go hand in hand.
  • Our Modern Excellence: At the same time, we ensure our students are fully prepared for the 21st century. We are fully accredited by the state and the Archdiocese, utilizing rigorous, evidence-based instructional methods and modern educational resources. This balanced approach ensures our graduates are both deeply grounded in timeless Catholic tradition and exceptionally prepared for the academic demands of high school and beyond.
